The tarot card for today is the Emperor. This is quite a stern and traditional card, but it has a lot to teach us when considered alongside today's Mercury-Pluto trine.

In the Rider Waite tarot deck, the Emperor depicts, well, and Emperor, seated on his solid stone throne, wearing his crown and holding his orb and his rod of office. Goats or rams are carved onto this throne, which sits against a backdrop of mountains. The Emperor has a white beard, symbolizing his age and experience.

There's very strong earth symbolism in this card, from the mountains to the Capricorn-like goats and the stone throne. The Emperor is a card which speaks of tradition, authority and the perceived wisdom of the status quo. The Emperor does things this way because they've always been done this way.

Today, intelligent Mercury in Virgo trines revolutionary Pluto in Capricorn. Under the influence of this aspect, we're tearing up the rule book and shaking up the earthy common sense once and for all - today doing things differently becomes a point of principle. Not a good match for the staid Emperor, you might think - but look at the Emperor's feet. He's wearing armor under his robes. He's wise enough to know when it's time for action and change, and he will budge when there is reason to budge.

The Emperor, together with today's Mercury-Pluto trine, urges you to shake up what needs to be shaken up. Go up against authority if you think you're right. Insist and persuade, and you may just be surprised at how willing authority is to listen.
