Today's tarot card is the Eight of Pentacles - a very studious card, also known as the apprentice card. How does this card relate to today's astrological energies, and in particular to the ingress of Mercury into Virgo?

In the Rider Waite tarot deck, the Eight of Pentacles shows a young man seated on a bench, working hard on crafting some pentacles. His previous efforts are hanging on the beam to the side, and one discarded one which didn't make the cut is on the floor. This card tends to show up when it's time to study, to perfect skills and to learn new ones. It heralds a time when practice and patience will be needed.

This is a terrific match for the energies of Mercury moving into Virgo. Virgo is a very studious sign, with a perfectionist streak - if the young man on the Eight of Pentacles is a Virgo, there will be many more pentacles destined for the floor before he is happy with the result. Virgo is also highly organized, methodical and patient, which calms some of Mercury's "always in a rush" ethos.

The message from both the Eight of Pentacles and the Mercury-Virgo ingress is to be open to learning new things. Don't expect overnight success from your study or your new skills - and do expect to make mistakes. Nevertheless, if you commit to it, you can expect to see long term success from study of any kind which starts now.
